Our original plan was to utilize our free morning and go to the hot springs and take a dip. Instead we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast (Kelly was feeling much better).
When it was time to check out of the hotel we left our overnight bags at the front desk and took a walk around the town. There was much more to Aguas Calientes then we originally thought. Up the side streets we found some great little shops and restaurants.
Sculptures and water fountains.
We saw lots of dogs (our favorite animals) and lots of construction being done. Our Dogs Of Peru collage! Yes, we are crazy!!!
And what did you do in Peru - Ronnie & Debbie. OH, we took pictures of dogs! LOL
We spent the late morning and early afternoon taking in the town then stopped for lunch at a local establishment where we had some odd , but OK tasting pizza.
There were a lot of young men making deliveries up the steep walkways. Not sure how they were doing their jobs but it sure looked tough.
After lunch We headed back to the train station to catch our ride to Cusco.
The train ride up to Cusco was very beautiful. It would have been a very serene ride but there were several people behind us who chose to talk loudly the entire way sharing personal information. We have yet to figure out why people feel compelled to try to impress one another.
As we traveled we were once again taken by how very poor the people in the mountains are. There were small homes or huts with fire pits in the center for heat and maybe for cooking as well. They had small patches of land they were tilling by had and some chickens and at least one cow. Another traveler from California (originally from Argentina) felt that the people living in these conditions were living in misery. Not sure if he was right but it wasn’t how we would want to have to live.
After serving a light snack and drink the staff on the train presented us with a cultural dance in costume. Not sure what the costume or dance meant because we could not hear the person on the speakers
Then we were presented with a fashion show of alpaca products. All were quite beautiful especially the reversible coat that was red on one side and black on the other. As soon as I saw that coat I knew Kelly would love it and would want it. She did buy it for herself and she looked very pretty in it.
She was chosen to model a wrap and did a great job. My girl “the ham!” LOL.
As we climbed toward Cusco I could feel myself getting a little nauseous. Yikes, I was hoping not to be affected by the altitude- again! Ron was developing a headache and we knew we were in for a little more discomfort once back in Cusco.
At the hotel we were informed it would be another early morning to catch our next flight to Lima. Ron and I opted to stay and eat in the hotel while Kelly and Patrick headed back into Cusco as their dining option.
Both of us were feeling the effects of the altitude so decided to turn in early so we would be rested for another travel day.
